I’m a full-time writer and sex educator who has tested more than 300 different sex toys in the past 20 years, including a decade of reviewing toys for Wirecutter. I began blogging about sex toys in 2011 and worked as a toy tester and copywriter for the retailer Stockroom.com for several years. I received my Master’s of Public Health degree from Indiana University in 2014, where I assisted research scientist Debby Herbenick with academic and consumer research related to sex toy use. While at Indiana University, I also worked as a blogger and sex educator at The Kinsey Institute.

For this guide:

  • I spent more than 75 hours on research and testing more than two dozen anal toys. Over 11 years of testing for this guide, I have recruited a panel of testers, prioritizing diversity in anatomy, gender, and sexual orientation.
  • I spoke with a proctologist, a gastroenterologist, sex toy bloggers, a physician who worked in emergency rooms for years, a wound-care nurse, and other anal sex experts.
  • I read medical literature on safe and pleasurable anal sex (and several case studies of anal play gone wrong).
  • Like all Wirecutter journalists, I review and test products with complete editorial independence. I’m never made aware of any business implications of my editorial recommendations. Read more about our editorial standards.

Five different anal toys on display in front of a light grey background.Bianca Alba for NYT WirecutterYou can find hundreds, if not thousands, of butt plugs and other anal toys, and the criteria for what makes a sex toy “good” can be highly subjective. Our picks stood out after we considered scores of models and tested more than two dozen of them.

Anal toys come in many different styles, including dildos, beads, plugs, and prostate stimulators. We decided to focus primarily on butt plugs, the most popular style of anal toy.

We determined our testing criteria using the advice of experts and a diverse pool of sex toy users. We considered only toys with the following attributes:

  • made with nonporous, body-safe materials
  • designed with a flared base, so they cannot become lost in the anal cavity (our testers preferred a longer T-shape or anchor-style base both for safety and because it sits nicely between the butt cheeks)
  • easy to use, wear, insert, and remove, and made to stay in place while in use
  • easy to clean and resistant to stains or scents

Vibrating functions and availability in multiple sizes were nice to have but not strictly necessary.

Across 11 years of testing, our panel of anal toy evaluators has included four women, four men, and two nonbinary people. The group has encompassed a range of beginner, intermediate, and advanced users.

We ask testers to use each toy at least once, preferably twice or more, and to incorporate toys into partner play when possible. We then ask testers to give each toy a score from 1 (hate it) to 10 (love it), rank their top toys in order of preference, and give subjective feedback.

Separately, I also test all of the silicone toys for interactions with silicone lubricant by applying a test patch to each silicone toy for one minute, rubbing to simulate friction, and leaving the toys to sit for one hour.

The best butt plug

Njoy Pure Plug

This easy-to clean toy comes in three sizes, so it’s accessible to beginners and advanced users alike. Testers loved the sensations of fullness and prostate stimulation the plug provided and found that it stayed firmly in place once inserted.

$106 from SheVibe$110 from LovehoneyThe elegant Njoy Pure Plug is a superlative butt plug. And if it works for you, it can serve you well for a lifetime.

It’s a gorgeous butt plug. This heavy stainless steel toy (weighing roughly 5, 7, and 11 ounces in the small, medium, and large sizes, respectively) created pleasurable sensations for both beginning and advanced toy testers alike. Our panelists loved the toy’s aesthetically pleasing design and found that it stimulated the prostate and stayed firmly in place for the duration of use. The Pure Plug is also the easiest to clean of our picks and is compatible with all types of lubricant.

The weighty metal feels great. Stainless steel may seem like a peculiar choice for an anal toy, but as with the Njoy Pure Wand dildo, another toy we recommend, testers enjoyed the feelings of weight and fullness this toy provided: “The steel is very, very heavy and sunk nicely into me due to the weight,” one tester reported. “It feels a lot ‘larger’ than it actually is once you put it in, due to the fact it does not ‘give’ against your tension.”

“The combination of heavy, smooth, and cool soothed my insides,” another tester said.

A Njoy Pure Plug inside a pink satin-lined keepsake box on display in front of a light blue background. Njoy toys come in satin-lined keepsake boxes. Marki Williams/NYT WirecutterIt’s built to last a lifetime. The Njoy Pure Plug is virtually indestructible, guaranteeing that this toy will last. It is also virtually frictionless when used with lubricant, as it doesn’t drag or pull on your skin the way some silicone toys can. And in contrast to silicone toys, it can be used with silicone lubricant. Also unlike some of the silicone toys we tested, the Pure Plug does not retain any unpleasant smells whatsoever after cleaning. Prior to play, you can chill this toy in the fridge or heat it under warm running water.

It’s comfortable enough for longer wear. The Pure Plug’s stem and base are narrow enough that it comfortably fits flat between the butt cheeks, and the narrowness of the toy’s stem ensures that the toy won’t accidentally slip out. Of all the butt plugs we’ve tested, this one stays in place most securely, with no risk of popping out during sexual play or prolonged wear.

The smallest size has a bulb that is 1 inch in diameter at its widest point; the medium is 1.25 inches, and the large is 1.5 inches. Beginners should opt for the smallest size, while more experienced users are likely to prefer the medium or large. The large Pure Plug is not huge as far as anal toys go—all three models measure less than 3 inches in length, and the large Pure Plug’s 1.5-inch diameter is manageable even for many intermediate users—but the hard texture may make these toys feel larger than a softer toy of the same size. Nevertheless, if you are unsure about which size to purchase, for this toy we recommend sizing up.

Advanced users who like bigger toys also have the option of the hefty Pure Plug 2.0, which is a solid 2 inches in diameter.

Njoy offers a 30-day exchange policy in the unlikely event that a toy arrives damaged.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

One of our testers’ primary complaints about the Pure Plug is that its tilted teardrop shape can make it difficult to insert and remove.

The base may be too hard to be comfortable when you’re sitting in a chair (if you like to wear a butt plug for prolonged periods of time), but it’s perfectly comfortable for standing or walking. One tester adored it as a wearable plug: “The real fun of this toy is the continuous stimulation if you wear it while doing other things.” A female tester loved using it during vaginal intercourse but didn’t like wearing it for longer periods of time because of the toy’s tendency to absorb body heat: “I could not wear it very long because it gets very, very warm inside you. It was so hot to the touch, and I felt like its adjustment to my body heat got almost uncomfortable.”

A silicone plug, with optional vibration

Romp Bass

This rechargeable silicone butt plug is suitable for everyone from beginners to advanced users. It’s a solid toy and a great value, whether you use the vibration features or not.

$35 from Amazon$27 from WalmartMay be out of stock

$40 from LovehoneyA vision in teal and bright-yellow silicone, the Romp Bass is a terrific value for a vibrating butt plug—and it’s priced reasonably enough to be a great value even if you don’t use the vibrating function.

It’s beginner-friendly. At 4.05 inches long with approximately 3.5 inches of insertable length, and measuring 4 inches in circumference (about 1.25 inches in diameter, or about the same width as the medium Njoy Pure Plug), this is a Goldilocks-sized plug that bridges the gap between small beginner models and larger toys, so it’s perfect for casual anal-play enthusiasts or those who prefer a medium-size toy.

Its silicone is especially sturdy and smooth. The Bass has a slim, tapered, oblong shape that makes it easy to insert and remove. The short, thick neck measures 0.5 inch long by 0.5 inch wide, and a long, 3.5-inch T-shaped base helps it stay safely in place during use. The toy is made of firm, velvety silicone that is easy to clean with soap and water, although it does retain some mild odor. It’s completely waterproof, with an IPX7 rating (the toy can be submerged in water up to 3 feet deep for at least 30 minutes).

It vibrates, and the battery lasts plenty long. The vibrating function charges via USB through a pin-shaped jack that plugs into the base of the toy, with a reported 80 minutes of charging time for 60 minutes of run time. We found that it both charged and ran for slightly less time than advertised, but only by a few minutes, and the vibrations felt somewhat weaker toward the end of the battery charge.

As with most toys that run on lithium batteries, you should charge the Bass regularly to preserve the health of the battery, even if you aren’t using it regularly. Although the toy does create an audible hum, it’s not loud enough to be heard through a closed door. You operate the toy using a single button on its base that allows you to cycle through four vibration patterns and six intensity levels. Cycling through 10 settings to find the perfect one while wearing the plug can be a bit annoying and fiddly, so we recommend turning on the vibration before inserting the toy. Once switched on, the toy offers reasonably strong vibrations, and both the base and the body vibrate, offering both internal and external stimulation.

A blue and yellow Romp Bass and a silver Njoy Pure Plug on display in front of a light blue background. The Romp Bass (left) and the medium Njoy Pure Plug (right). Marki Williams/NYT WirecutterIt stays in place. This toy works great for both solo and partner play, and it can be worn during intercourse by either the giving or (vaginally) receiving partner, although some people have complained that the 3-inch-long base can get in the way during vaginal intercourse. It’s thick enough to be worn as a warm-up toy before anal intercourse yet comfortable enough for prolonged wear while you’re doing other activities. It stays in place well but is still easy to remove.

The Romp Bass is covered with a two-year warranty.

If you’re new to anal, you’ll likely need to work your way up from a smaller toy to larger ones, which this set lets you do. These three butt plugs are made of solid silicone.

$25 from AmazonMay be out of stock

$36 from WalmartDoc Johnson’s Mood Naughty silicone butt plugs are inexpensive but high-quality and well designed. The shape of the plugs included in the three-toy Doc Johnson Mood Naughty 1 Trainer Set is unlikely to offer prostate stimulation, as the tip is quite narrow, but the taper makes each toy easy for beginners to insert and allows it to stay firmly in place once it’s inside the anus. A longer narrow stem and a sturdy T-shaped base make these plugs comfortable and secure for prolonged wear and ideal for both solo and partner play.

The silicone is smooth and has the right amount of give. The Mood Naughty 1 plugs are made from a comfortable, flexible matte silicone (available in black or pink) that unfortunately has a tendency to pick up lint and dust, so make sure to give them a rinse before use. After use, you can easily clean these toys with soap and water, and you can also safely boil or bleach them if necessary. Like most silicone toys, these plugs also tend to pick up a bit of odor with use; fortunately, the smell is most noticeable directly after washing and tends to fade somewhat after the toy dries.

This set includes three identical plugs ranging in size from tiny (3.25 inches long and 0.75 inch wide) to small (4 inches long and 1 inch wide) to a hefty medium (5.25 inches long and 1.25 inches wide). Although some people will quickly outgrow the smallest size, it’s nice for absolute beginners to have an unintimidating finger-sized plug to help the body acclimate to anal stimulation before attempting larger toys.

The best toy for prostate stimulation

Aneros Helix Syn V

This silicone toy is designed to stimulate the prostate, or P-spot, providing both pressure and fullness. Its vibrations can be operated hands-free, provided that you power on the device before insertion.

$80 from Amazon$100 from LovehoneyFor prostate stimulation specifically, we like the Aneros Helix Syn V. This vibrating toy is coated with black silky silicone that is firm with a slight amount of give. Unique among our picks, the body of this toy is designed to apply pressure to the prostate, and the flexible curved arms of the base offer external stimulation of the perineum.

This prostate toy can be used with or without vibration. Aneros markets the toy as capable of delivering a hands-free prostate orgasm. This wasn’t our panelist’s experience, but the toy was still plenty pleasurable to use.

One thing we have discovered in our years of testing is that prostate sensitivity, like G-spot sensitivity, is highly variable from person to person. Some people feel nothing at all, some experience pleasure without an orgasm, and others have multiple orgasms. Whether a prostate stimulator works well for you may depend on your unique anatomy.

This toy charges in a magnetic cradle attached to a USB cord, boasting a 180-minute run time from a single 120-minute charge. It offers eight vibration patterns with three intensities each; reviewers report strong but quiet vibrations. The power button requires two fingers to operate, so switching the settings while you’re wearing the toy is somewhat challenging. Because this toy is waterproof, you can easily clean it with soap and water.

The four different recommend anal toys and their different sizes on display in front of a light blue background.Marki Williams/NYT WirecutterWhen done correctly, anal play can be painless and pleasurable for people of any anatomy, gender, or sexual orientation.

People with vaginas may find that anal toys add an extra dimension of stimulation to both solo and partner play. People with penises may find that anal toys are great for stimulating the prostate, or P-spot, an erogenous zone similar to the G-spot.

Enjoying anal or prostate stimulation says nothing about an individual’s gender or sexual orientation. It simply means that they enjoy anal or prostate stimulation.

“There are three muscles in the anus, and then there’s the overlying skin. When these are trained properly, together, they can create the gateway to pleasure,” explained Dr. Evan Goldstein, a proctologist in New York who specializes in anal surgeries. (The company that Goldstein co-founded, Future Method, sells a variety of anal-care products. We did not test any of them as part of this review.)

The anal sphincters include both voluntary muscles (muscles that you can control, such as squeezing during Kegel exercises) and involuntary muscles, which you can train to relax with gentle stimulation. Beyond the anal canal is the rectum, the lower portion of the large intestine, which measures about 5 to 6 inches long with a sharp curve at the top where it turns into the sigmoid colon.

Goldstein emphasized the importance of slowly and gradually training the anal area to strengthen the delicate skin and help the rings of muscle learn to relax. In his book Butt Seriously, he suggests a six-week protocol using anal dilators. “So many people think they can just go from nothing to something big,” he wrote in an email interview. “That can lead to significant anal injury, like tears (anal fissures) and dilated veins (hemorrhoids).”

Dr. Carlton Thomas, a gastroenterologist specializing in anal health, offers his own technique for helping to open and relax the anus. He calls it The Butt Clock: “If you think of your hole as a circle like a clock, the external sphincter is made out of skeletal muscle, the internal’s made of smooth muscle. You can’t control that internal sphincter with your brain, but you can with lateral pressure. If you gently insert your finger and press at over to 3 o’clock, and hold for about 15 to 30 seconds, repeat over at 9 o’clock and hold, go down to 6 and up to twelve, that tiny little circle starts opening up magically.” This practice can be done solo or as part of foreplay, he explained, using plenty of lubrication and deep slow breathing to help the body relax.

Adequate hydration and a fiber-rich diet can also help promote anal health in preparation for anal play by preventing constipation. Some people like to cut down on mess by doing a few quick rinses of their rectum with an enema bulb filled with lukewarm (not hot) water at least 30 minutes prior to anal play. Goldstein offers a guide to safer anal douching on his website. Thomas also recommends against eating for about an hour before play because of a bodily reaction called gastrocolic reflex: “When you eat, food hits your stomach and sends a signal to your rectum to empty, so you might have something happen if you do it too close to eating.”

Objects other than toys designed for anal use should never be inserted into the anus. Anal toys must have a flared base so they are not lost inside the body, and they must be used in tandem with lubricant to protect the delicate anal tissues, which are not self-lubricating. (Any type of lubricant works for anal play, but we like Boy Butter, which is available in both oil-based and water-based formulas.) Silicone and oil-based lubes are ideal for anal play because they stay slippery longer than water-based formulas, but you should not use silicone lube with silicone toys, and you should not use oil-based lube with condoms or mechanized toys.

Anal play should not hurt. Paying attention to your body’s pain signals is the best way to avoid injury. It is best to start with smaller toys (or a single finger) and work your way up. Go slowly; do not use numbing lubricants. If you are unable to insert a toy comfortably, you may need to try a smaller toy, try more lubricant and warmup, or take a break and try again another time.

Anal toys must have a flared base so they are not lost inside the body, and they must be used in tandem with lubricant to protect the delicate anal tissues, which are not self-lubricating.

Experts we interviewed said that it is highly unlikely that you will sustain an injury if you use adequate lubricant and an appropriately sized toy with a flared base. Former ER doctor Bessie McCann, who now works in an aesthetics clinic, explained that the majority of accidents occur when individuals penetrate themselves with an object that does not have a flared base, such as a dildo or vibrator not intended for anal use, and loses control of it, which is easy to do with slippery fingers.

McCann shared a few tips for how to select the safest possible anal toys:

  • The base of the toy should be wider than the body of the toy. If the anal muscles have already dilated sufficiently to admit the width of the toy, there’s no guarantee that a toy without a wider base won’t slip inside the rectum.
  • The base of a toy should sit flat relative to the stem, rather than tapering downward, as that could make it easier for the toy to slip inside.

In general, anchor-shaped or T-shaped bases may be safer and more comfortable than smaller, round ones.

In the highly unlikely event that you do lose a toy inside, don’t try to retrieve it yourself, McCann said. Seek immediate medical attention, as your attempts to retrieve the object might end up pushing it deeper into the body, increasing the likelihood of injury.

Delaying seeking medical care is “playing with your own life because at worst an anal foreign-body insertion can potentially be fatal,” said nurse Catina Ponticello, who emphasized that embarrassment is not a reason to avoid seeking care: “We all have our kinks, and the nurse taking care of you may like anal play just as much as you do.”

For more information about anal health and safety, we recommend Goldstein’s book Butt Seriously: The Definitive Guide to Anal Health, Pleasure, and Everything In Between, The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women by Tristan Taormino, and Anal Pleasure and Health: A Guide for Men, Women and Couples by Jack Morin.

If you want a butt plug for longer wear: Consider the B-Vibe Snug Plug. It has a stout, weighted hexagonal body and a much longer and thinner stem compared with the average toy. This design helps it stay comfortably in place, although it can be difficult to insert and remove. It is available in seven sizes ranging from the thumb-width size 1 (3.8 inches long by 0.9 inch wide) to the soda-can-width size 7 (7.2 inches long by 2.5 inches wide), offering something for everyone. Unlike the Njoy Pure Plug, for which we recommend sizing up if you are unsure what size you need, we found the size differential between the three sizes of Snug Plug we tested (1, 2, and 3) to be pretty significant. As such, we’ve concluded that for this toy, it is better to size down.

The B-Vibe Anal Training Kit & Education Set is the most comprehensive—and pricey—of all the beginner-level butt plug sets we tried. In addition to small, medium, and large silicone plugs (the medium size vibrates), this kit includes a lube syringe, which you can use to insert lube directly into the rectum, as well as an enema bulb and an excellent book titled Complete Guide to Anal Play, all packaged in a matching storage box. It’s a great set for those interested in exploring anal play, but you could assemble a similar kit at half the price, as both lube shooters and enema bulbs (or bottles) are inexpensive and available for purchase individually.

If you don’t need an especially small starter plug like the one that comes in the Doc Johnson Mood Naughty 1 Trainer Set we recommend, the Biird Regii set (currently unavailable) is excellent. The necks of these plugs are also a bit thicker in comparison with those of the Mood Naughty 1 plugs, which makes them ideal if you are wearing a plug in preparation for anal sex. However, we found that the relatively shorter necks on the Regii plugs made them somewhat more likely to slip out.

The Crystal Delights Crystal T is an elegant clear borosilicate-glass plug with a slim, T-shape handle that fits nicely between the cheeks. Although the plug appears small, the bulb is fairly thick at 1.5 inches, and our beginner-level testers found it challenging to insert. It would be a great pick for more experienced users who like the cool, hard feeling of glass toys.

We found the thicker, rigid-plastic Aneros Progasm Classic prostate stimulator more difficult to insert and remove in comparison with the Helix Syn V, but this toy’s firmness offered excellent sensations. Some owners have reported in their reviews that this toy immediately “hit the spot” better than others could, but we think most people starting out with prostate stimulators may benefit from a softer, more flexible toy.

Lelo’s Loki and Loki Wave are more expensive than similar toys we tested, so we chose not to try them.

Njoy’s Pfun Plug is longer than the Pure Plug, with curvature meant to stimulate the prostate. We haven’t tested it. However, we have long recommended the Pure Wand, which works for both G-spot and P-spot stimulation.

The plugs included in the PeepshowToys Beginner Booty Bundle have bulbs that taper directly into the wider neck, which causes them to slip out more easily. The T-shaped base of each plug, while not unsafe, is shorter than those of other plugs we tested, with the base of the smallest plug measuring as wide as the bulb of the largest plug. The bases also taper down from the stem.

We considered the Pillow Talk Sneaky Plug as a possible lower-cost alternative to the Njoy Pure Plug. It is an attractive plug with a T-shaped base, and it was very easy to insert, but we found that it slipped out easily. This is a smaller plug (1 inch at its widest point) with a shorter stem (just 0.5 inch long), so it is likely to suit only beginners.

The silicone Tantus Neo is 1.4 inches in diameter and has an insertable length of around 4 inches. We found that the Njoy Pure Plug was the superior option overall, including for beginners. At 1.5 inches and 2.5 inches in diameter, respectively, the Tantus Ryder (currently unavailable) and Ringo were too large to appeal to a general audience, though they seemed to be great options for intermediate and advanced users. The Tantus Little Flirt slipped too much.

The Zini Janus Lamp Iron has a zinc-alloy metal base and a textured silicone-coated body. Our prostate massager tester reported that this toy was easy to insert and comfortable to wear, and that the heavy metal base allowed for more internal movement of the toy when he contracted his muscles. It’s a great toy, but we think the similarly shaped Aneros Helix Syn V is the better buy, particularly for people who are interested in vibration.
